Hey Folks...
So in my last post I wrote about the first 50 point list I am going to use in an upcoming tournament, here I will talk about the second.
The first list used a caster I am familiar with, this one uses a caster that (at time of writing) I have never used. I have seen him used and the Butcher Unleashed is brutal. Without any shadow of a doubt Butcher III is one of the hardest hitting casters that exists. With a massive POW stat, Weapon Master and a feat that gives him all his Focus back there isn't anything in the game that isn't going to die when smashed in the face by him. Whilst the first list was all about attrition and combos this list is delightfully simple, its all about getting the Butcher into range of the oppositions caster. Butcher III has a massive threat range and many spells to support him in killing things and the list is built around getting him to the point where he can assassinate.
I will use Beast 09 as his Jack, whilst the fluff part of me doesn't want to (because Beast 09 is the personal Jack of another caster) the fact that he is fairly self sufficient and has Thresher for clearing out troops and charge lanes for Butcher means he is a good Jack for this army.
The rest of the list is a support act. I have put Malakov (junior Warcaster) in the list for a couple of reasons. I haven't used him before and he looks interesting, it means I can run another Jack without using the Butchers Focus and he also has a cunning little trick. If he is hit with a ranged attack he can pass the damage off to a nearby model. If I keep him within 2" of the War Argus he can pass of damage and then the Butcher unit can make a vengeance move, this means the Butcher can move 3" closer to the opposing caster.
The rest of the army is there to clear charge lanes, Widowmakers, Greylords and Greatbears. The Shocktroopers are to provide a bit of cover to these units early game. With two Jacks, the Greatbears I have units that can take Jacks and these units along with Widowmakers and Greylords can deal with Infantry.
I am really looking forward to trying this list out and am hoping the Butcher is as bad ass as I think he is.

Return of the Khador, 50 points and fighting.
Hey Folks.....
I have put my name down for a Warmachine tournament in May and its actually my first ever Warmachine tournament. It will be a challenge for a couple of reasons: -
1. Its 50 points - I have played zero 50 point games.
2. Its Deathclock - I have played zero Deatclock games.
I suspect I won't do that well, but thats not the point. I haven't played a lot of Warmachine lately, I fell a bit out of love with it. I decided to try and use a Convergence of Cyriss (CoC) for a year, but after a few games I just wasn't enjoying using the army. Honestly it was keeping me awake at night trying to figure out what was wrong with it and how to change it. When something game related is keeping you awake at night its time to put it down for a bit. I'll come back to CoC in the future but for the moment I need to play something else for a while.

I see it as very much an attrition list. There are two big defensive units in there, the Iron Fang Pikeman and the Man-O-War. The Winterguard and Doomreavers will stay behind them and then pass through and unleash at the right moment. Herne and Jonne work well with Irusk, with Valachev attached they become a Khador unit and therefore Irusks Fire For Effect will work on them. They get three templates from one shot and therefore FFE will allow all these to have boosted damage. Its a 5 point investment so I am hoping that its worth it, a few practice games should help to decide if this is the case. The other question I have is regarding the Doomreavers, they hit hard but can go down easy. I am wondering if its a case of take 2 units or 0. I figure that they will be safe behind the defensive line unit I want them to be unleashed. Again it will be one of those things I need to figure out after a couple of games.
Things to paint for this list: -
1. Iron Fang Pikeman.
2. Doomreavers.
3. Herne & Jonne plus Valachev.
So this is the initial list design.
Supreme Kommandant Irusk - WJ: +5
- Behemoth - PC: 13
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich - PC: 2
Iron Fang Kovnik - PC: 2
Winter Guard Infantry - Leader & 9 Grunts: 6
- 1 1 Rocketeer's: 1
- Winter Guard Officer & Standard - Winter Guard Officer & Standard 2
Man-O-War Shocktroopers - Leader & 2 Grunts: 6
Herne & Jonne - Herne and Jonne: 3
- Koldun Kapitan Valachev - Valachev 2
Iron Fang Pikemen - Leader & 9 Grunts: 8
- Black Dragon Officer & Standard - PC: 2
Doom Reavers - Leader & 5 Grunts: 6
- Greylord Escort - Greylord Escort 2

Nurgle Completion
Hey Folks...
1. Plaguebearers are crap. They are only good at getting in the way of things, although they are surprisingly good at knocking out vehicles with their special Plague Sword rule.
2. Ku'Garth is awesome. I actually started him in reserve but I think next time I will start him on the table. He has one thing that Daemons lack and that is some shooting, an AP3 pie plate with desent range should be on the table turn 1. The risk is that he gets shot up but with decent setup and his stats he should be safe.
3. Plague Flies. Undecided as yet, they got to do one charge, lost and the then double sixed their instability and left the table.
4. Beasts. Very good, they pretty much munch through anything and 4 wounds is very handy.
5. Soulgrinders. Not sure yet, they did ok but nothing special.
6. Helldrake. Amazing, but then what else did you expect?
All-in-all I am happy with it as an army and I think it will take a few more games for me to fully get to grips with it.
Here are a couple of pictures of my finished Helldrake, it uses the Forge World Plague Drone model at either end and the body of a Tyrannid monstrous creature, i really like it and think it fits in with the theme of the army.
So what else has been happening in my hobby time? I have actually decided to go to an event this year in the form of the GW Throne of Skulls Hobbit tourney (used to be LotR). I used to be a regular at GW events but it actually all got a bit too competitive for me. Maybe its an age thing but the armies that started turning up weren't really what I would call a proper army, they were just find the most powerful thing and spam it to death. I don't like to play that way, if thats your bag then fine it just wasn't mine so I stopped going. With the Hobbit game however you can't really do that, you can make powerful lists of course but I think the mechanics of the game allow everyone a fair shot. SO I have delved into the cases that were sitting in the back of the cupboard and dragged out my LotR figures.
What army? I have a ton of models for the game as its actually one of my favourites, this year its 600 points which is a nice level, it allows powerful models but at the cost of numbers so its a risky business. I had several main choices: -
1. Helmsdeep (Rohan Cav with Elves).
2. Goblins and Spiders.
3. Dwarves.
I actually got all the models for these out on the table, I like to look at the physical army once I have done the list, it helps me to see it more rather than just looking at it on paper. I love the Goblins and Spiders but I have taken them to a lot of events before, the Rohan/Elves just didn't look enough models. If you go for low model count then they need to have decent armour.... so Dwarves it is. They are a nice middle ground, although fairly light on numbers they are rock hard and have some great characters for a decent points cost. they also have the added bonus of being all painted. Once I came up with a decent list it turns out I needed a couple more models as some characters have been added since I last played so they have been purchased and are awaiting the application of paint. Five models is all I need to do and then the others need a bit of a tidy up and maybe some rebasing as they are approaching 10 years old.
Warmachine has also been getting some love and I have added to a couple of bits to the Convergence of Cyriss army, I had my first game with them recently. I lost due to a pure caster placement on my part allowing the opponent to shoot him, my opponent would have died next turn as his caster was the only model he had left so it was purely bad play from me. I really liked them, you have to think very hard about the order you do things as they are an army that work by utilising all the other parts and not just rushing forward. On their own the models don't seem that great but when you combine them correctly they are awesome. I will defiantly be putting some table time in with them, at first I am just going to pick a couple of casters and try to learn them rather than go with different ones each time. I also painted up Gorman De Wulfe, he is neat little Merc that can help to nullify Jacks.
So whats next? Going to put 40K aside for a while after finishing the Daemons, although I have a couple of FW Mechanicus models I want to paint, just for painting them. If I do another 40K army then they might be a choice. Otherwise I want to get the rest of my Khador models finished so that they are all done, I might need another list for those. Still have some Flames of War to finish to but I have reduced the model pile a bit as I haven't bought anything for a while which is good, although its Salute next month and it would be rude not to make a few purchases right?
Here are a couple of extra bits, in order to get the Helldrake into the Daemon army I have had to ally with Chaos Marines so I therefore needed a HQ, I went with a Chaos Sorcerer as I love this model from ForgeWorld.
And finally for you oldies out there.... we played a few games of Necromunda this month. I haven't played it for years but I knew I had got this model in one of my boxes from when the game came out that was still unpainted. I guess this fella must be pushing 20 years old... and I just got round to painting him. I think he must be the oldest model I own that hasn't been painted.
Until next time...
So after all my moaning about my inability to finish something, I have actually finished something!!!! My Nurgle Daemon 40K army is now finished to 1850 points, now of course no army is ever finished but I have a fully painted 1850 points to start with. I suspect there might be some changes after a few games but the whole purpose of this army was to have something a little different and that looked awesome on the table.
Last week I actually got to put in on the table and general opinions were that it looked awesome, so job done. But was it any good? Well in its first game I played against some Space Wolves, in the early turns I was getting a spanking but then somehow I managed to pull it back to a draw. So what did I learn?

A Fly on the wall.
Hi Folks
So I have been away from the keyboard for a while, in a strange twist of fate I have actually had a bit of a social life the last few weekends so blog posting time hasn't been so abundant, GTA5 may have a bit to do with it as well.
As I may have mentioned (once or twice) I recently moved house. During the time leading up to this myself and my Mrs had to have the "conversation", where was my painting setup going to go? Andrea wanted this to be a "grown-up house" and as I had my own Man-Cave all gaming related objects should be placed here. I then mentioned that I like to paint in the evenings so if the painting was to go in the Man-Cave we really wouldn't see each other that much. This kicked off a long process which I believe is known as - compromise. I suggested a writing desk style piece of furniture, a bureau. this allowed me all the space I needed, could be tucked away in a corner and also could be closed up to hide all the toys when our grown-up friends came round for dinner. So here is the current painting setup.
Everything you see in the rather messy state can be packed away within the bureau and be out of sight but it actually gives you a lot of storage and space to paint. As you can see I am in the middle of my second Soul Grinder for the Daemons and there are a couple of Khador bits waiting in the wings. It wasn't a cheap option at £200 but it should last a long time and its something I'll get a lot of use out of.
So onto hobby stuff, the main hobby related thing I have been doing over the last few weeks is buying stuff, this is both good and bad. How can this be bad you ask yourself? Well, I have spoken before about my tendencies to start projects and then get half way through and have another idea and then start something else, well this has lead to me having a large collection of unopened boxes lying around. I had actually managed to get the pile down a bit but it does seem to be creeping back up again.
The reason for my splurge is that I managed to get to Dark Sphere in London, its a really cool shop that sells everything so I bought a few bits for Warmachine and some stuff for Flames of War, I am not a massive fan of ordering stuff from the Internet, I like to look at it, a rather old fashioned view I know. Game shops are also a dying breed and I like to support them when possible.
I have been keeping up with the plan to finish off my Daemon Nurgle army by completing the Plague Flies unit bringing it up to five strong including a banner. Next is the Soul Grinder (using the Forge World model). Once this is done it just leaves me a bunch more Plague Bearers and then it comes to the final few points. Originally I was going to go for a Daemon Prince but I am having second thoughts. I need some decent air defense so I am submitting to the beard in me and going with some Chaos Marine allies so I can get a Helldrake into the list. I am, however, going to do something different with the model so it fits in the rest of the army, its an ambitious conversion I have in mind but if it works out it should be stunning, i'll keep you posted.
I have also been painting up a few Warmachine bits on the side. I have been playing a lot of Epic Sorcha lately but using the Prime model but during one of my recent trips to an indie model shop I managed to pick up the Epic version. She is a great caster and her feat is truly devastating when played at the right moment, in a recent game Beast09 managed to totally destroy one Menoth Heavy Jack and take three quarters of the boxes off another, brutal.
A while back I also picked up the starter set for the new Convergence of Cyriss, I quite liked the look of the models and the paint scheme is pretty easy, I haven't put a lot of time into the painting them, I am just looking to get them on the table asap. I am not really sure on tactics with these chaps yet but with the battle box caster and the faction in general its all about the Jacks (Vectors) which is pretty different to my Khador which is basically a one Jack army.
Last but not least I painted up Durgen Madhammer, I have had a bunch of Rhulic models for several years but they have just sat in a box. Whilst not the most powerful army I loved the Dwarf models and with the release of the new Rhulic colossal I decided to dig them out and give them a bit of love, I can always use Rhulic units with my Khador army as well so they have a dual purpose. Durgen is a great model with a ridiculously large hammer and also a fairly substantial gun for such a little fella. His spell list is kinda cool and his feat can be brutal but you need to build a list with these specific spells in mind otherwise he won't do too well. I would like to get some Rhulic stuff done so will do the odd bit here and there when the mood strikes.

So what's next? I will carry on with the 40K Daemons, they are so close to being finished and it will be nice to have them done. Not sure what to do after that, I have a bunch of Khador bits to do and some Flames of War so will probably get those bits done. Although if rumor has it then 40K Knights are about to hit so that might be worth looking into. I have always loved the back story to the Mechanicum and have been eyeing up some of the Forge World models so will be interesting to see what that release brings.
Until next time...

One Warcaster and his dog (and a horse)
Hey folks,
Ok so yet again I am very late with another post, but this time I have a really good excuse. I am a very keen cyclist and about four weeks ago I got a bit too keen going down a hill and ended up having a bit of a crash which resulted in a broken collar bone. As you can appreciate this put a bit of a dampener on my hobby time. On the bright side once I got to be able to move my arm enough to get in the painting position I had enough time off work to actually get a lot done. What I had to do was get everything out with my good army, sit down and then with my good arm move my bad arm into position with the brush (after a bunch of painkillers). Then when I needed to dip or wash the brush I would take the brush out of my bad hand with the good hand, do what I needed and then put it back. This was slow, but I had plenty of time to kill.
So I have been focusing on my Khador arm, there is a Steamroller tourney coming up at the club and I wanted to get the Khador army all painted, as I have mentioned I don't like playing with unpainted models and there is nothing like a tourney deadline to spur on the painting. I have been playing a few practise games and have come up with a list I like, this tourney actually allows two lists, so I am going to take one list that I know will work ok and then something a bit more risky.
My list is basically a Winterguard Deathstar and this will form the basis of both lists. Then the other bits can be interchanged.
My caster is Epic Irusk. He works really well with an infantry based army, he is not a combat caster
but a buff/support caster. He gives Tough to units and allows them to move through each other and ignore friendlies when determining Line Of Sight. He has a couple of great spells like Fire For Effect which is an upkeep that allows a unit to boost To Hit and Damage rolls for the first shooting attack they make. This is great with a Mortar or Conquest for example.
The main Deathstar is as follows: -
5 Man-O-War Shocktroopers.
Full Winterguard + Command and Standard + (1 to3) Rocketeers.
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich.
The tactic is that the Shocktroopers go first and use Shield Wall and the Winterguard follow behind them. The Command and Standard give DEF bonuses and allow the unit spray attacks as well as normal shooting. Jozef has some useful songs to sing boosting To Hit rolls. The unit also has combined shooting and melee abilities so can take Warjacks and Infantry alike. This unit can really lay down the hurt.
The rest of the army changes depending on my mood and what models I want to take, in the main list I suspect I will take the following: -
Juggernaut. (Irusk only needs one Jack and the Jugger is good enough for 7 points).
Widowmakers. (Good unit to knock off some Warjack boxes or to take out some Solos early game).
Man-O-War Drakhun (Able move down flanks, or go after units holding objects, adds a bit of speed and hitting power to the army that largely needs to move as one).
Winterguard Mortar Crew (Big gun with a long range and AOE, whats not to love?).
The Second list will be the main Deathstar but will feature something a bit more risky: -
Conquest (Hard hit, big and shooty, will benefit from Fire For Effect. Downside is that its a lot of points for a 35pt list. If the enemy takes it out thats 19pts from a 35pt list, thats a big hole).
So the full lists are: -
List 1.
Epic Irusk
Juggernaut
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
Man-O-War Drakhun
Man-O-War Shocktroopers (full unit)
Winterguard (full unit) + Officer and Standard + 2 Rocketeers
Winterguard Mortar Crew
Widowmakers
List 2.
Epic Irusk
Conquest
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
Man-O-War Shocktroopers (full unit)
Winterguard (full unit) + Officer and Standard + 2 Rocketeers
I am really enjoying playing my Khador army as they are really different to the Cryx I have been playing for the best part of three years. They were very much "run forward and hit stuff", but the Khador army takes a bit more thinking about but also has more options on what it can do.
So painting wise I have got a whole bunch of stuff done whilst I have been off, it has taken longer to do but I didn't really have anything else to do and there is only so much Jeremy Kyle you can take.
The first thing I did was get the Winterguard finished, they are one of those units that you just have to grit your teeth and get done. Models are ok, nothing exciting but once they are done its done.
After this I finished off the trusty Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich to go with the Winterguard, this veteran runs along side the unit singing his tunes to boost their skills.
With the bulk of the army done it was time to get the Warcaster finished. I left him to the end mainly so I can get the rest of the armies colours and patterns sorted so that when I come to paint the main character I wont make any errors.
The army was actually very simple to paint, there a really three main colours (Red, Grey and Gold). Once these have been painted onto the model the areas are washed with black to add the battle grime effect, the areas are then highlighted up using the original colours. The details are then picked out to finish off the model.

So whats next? Well to totally complete the army I need to finish the Widowmakers so these will be next. After that I really want to get the Conquest done, I am looking forward to this. Then I have a unit of Iron Fang to paint and then my whole Khador collection will be painted. I think this might be the first time I have all the models for a specific collection painted.
So now they are done I am looking forward to putting them on the table at the club tourney, i'll let you know how they get on.
Until next time...

Khador, Eldar and the lull.
Hi Folks.
So its been a while.... I have been suffering the hobby lull. There have been a few reasons for this but basically real life has just popped its head through the door and I have been busy with other things. But to be honest I have also been lacking a bit of hobby inspiration. Its something we all go through at certain points. I just bought a new Time Trial bike so have been spending most evenings out on the bike getting some exercise, oh and my girlfriend moved over from Argentina.
I have been painting a few things though, last time I blogged I was working on Daemon army, well that has taken a bit of a back seat at the moment. I have been concentrating on my Warmachine Khador army and have finished off the Man-O-War Shocktroopers. I love this unit, they just look so cool and one of the main reasons that I went for Khador in the first place. I have also started on the Winterguard Unit and am about halfway through them, they are one of those units that just need to be done, not particularly fun to paint, but needs doing.
The Eldar codex has also been released this month and some of the models look really awesome. Eldar were my first really serious army and I won a couple of local tournaments with them many years ago. Whilst not seriously considering an Eldar army, I purchased a box of the Wraithguard/Wraithblade models to paint up just because I liked the look of them. I have also painted a Farseer model that I had lying around. Initially I fancied doing a Iyandan army in their traditional yellow scheme but having looked at a lot of the pictures I am not keen on the yellow plus its really hard to paint. I therefore went for a red scheme. I am having a bit of a red phase at the moment, maybe future generations that study my work will call this my "red period".
One thing that had perked up my hobby juices again is a little tourney we are having at the Brighton Club. Its a 750pt tourney with Combat Patrol style army list restrictions.
No 2+ saves.
No unit character with more than 2 wounds.
Vehicles with armour no more than 33 (thats adding up front, back and one side).
No HQ's
Must have 2 Troops.
All other choices from the normal force org.
I have to say its a real challenge to build this kind of army. My first thought was Marines as I have been playing them a lot lately, plus this edition is very shooting army orientated. I did a couple of lists but wasn't feeling it. So I thought - hey, its a fun tourney so lets roll out the Orks and see how many models I can get into 750 points. I made a list and (as usual) it meant I had to paint a whole bunch of models in just two weeks. Well it turns out that when you have a target, like a touney, its amazing what you can do. So in the last couple of weeks I have managed to bang out 18 Ork Boyz with Shootas and 20 Gretchin. Now these are not painted to a great standard, but using certain techniques they are still pretty good, a high tabletop standard I would say. But it has got me painting again after having a bit of a lull. Having the target of the tourney really helped to motivate me to pickup a brush again. I managed to get the list to 100 models and this included three Truks. After a bit of thought I did reduce this a little to get one Power Klaw into the list but the model count is still 96. For 750 I think this is pretty good and it will be interesting to see how it rolls on the table, I have just gone for sheer numbers.... nothing is too powerful I have just gone for sheer numbers.
So whats in the future. Well I am determined to get my Khador stuff finished. I have a list that I like with a solid base of core choices. This will allow me to mix a few bits in and out whilst keeping the core stable. I really like playing with the Khador army, it's a refreshing change from playing Cryx for so long. I still want to do a Hordes army and the Skorne models are sitting on a shelf looking at me ready to get painted.
Until next time...

colossal Colossals
Hey Folks,
The hobby station has been a busy place in the last few weeks or so, mainly as I have lots of "things" coming up that I want to get models painted for and also because the pile of stuff to get done seems to be getting bigger.
The first thing I finished this week was the Scout squad for my Ultramarines, these guys sit in the Landspeeder Storm and either go for a vehicle that's giving me trouble or hide somewhere whilst a unit of Terminators deep strike in to deal with the enemy before they grab an objective. In the first couple of games they performed really well and I am very happy with them. This leaves me with just the Predator to paint to complete the list I am using in the 1500 tournement at the club.
So since I wrote the above paragraph I have played my last group game against Tom and his Imperial Guard. It was a really tough game which I was on the back foot from right from the beginning. We were playing the Relic scenario which I haven't played before, I had a plan against Tom's Guard and then I let the scenario change my plan to the extent that I screwed myself I think. Tom played really well and his army is brutal. My original plan was to get the Terminators into his back field to take out the big guns but instead I put everything into trying to get the Relic and Tom just sat there an blew me away. I nearly pulled off a draw towards the end but Tom's rate of fire was just too much and he took the game 6-0. I like playing Tom, our games are always really good fun and always end up going to the wire. Top two form the group go through to the Quarters and I should be in second, so will see who I have to face next round.
Also released this week is "Death from the Skies" the new GW book with updated flyer rules, this came a bit out of the blue but I instantly went out and purchased another StormRaven to add to my Ultramarines army. This will look really cool flying about with the StormTalons and also gives me lots of flyer options with the Grey Knights as allies. When I paint it I will do my Forge World StormEagle at the same time.
I also stuck together all the models from the Flames of War starter box game. The models are pretty cool, the detail on the infantry is awesome for such small models and the tank kits are also really great. I have painted up a few of the German tanks and a couple of squads of the infantry and I am really starting to like the look of them, they are also very quick to paint, I found that doing some base coats with a wash and then a highlight was enough to make them look good. the tanks need a bit more attention but with the camo scheme I used (based on the advice in the stater set) it still only took a couple of hours to get four tanks done. My mindset with these models was to get them done quickly to a good gaming standard, not spend ages on making them look awesome.
At the Brighton club day this month we decided to have a bit of a Warmachine Colossal bash. Several of the guys have managed to get Colossal's painted up so we thought the best thing to do was to have a big four player game featuring all of them, so 70pts a side each with two of the mighty machines. Michael and I took to the table with Mercs/Cryx and we faced off against Andy with his Menoth and Achilles with his Cygnar. Three objectives were on table with one of them disappearing after the first turn. I made a brave alpha strike with the Kraken on the Menoth beast after the Merc Colossal had knocked a few boxes off with its guns. It was a brave move which would have been game changing but after the dust had settled the Menoth Colossal was left with one damage box, this allowed the Menoth Colossal to take out much of the Cryx army in its own turn including the Warcaster. Eventually the Menoth machine went down which left the Merc Galleon to take on the rest of the Menoth army and the Cygnar Colossal.

The Galleon is a beast of a jack and managed to take out the Cygnar caster and knocked the Cygnar Colossal down to its last couple of damage boxes before the unbelievable happened. A lone Merc Trencher with nothing better to do walked up to the Cygnar giant and with an un-boosted attack stabbed the giant machine with a stick, he must have hit something important in the foot of the machine as it proceeded to fall over in a heap and the Mercs found a new hero. The winner came down to the last dice roll of the game, Andy needed to do the Merc caster 18 damage which meant rolling three 6's on three dice. Andy tool the dice in hand and rolled....6......6..........5..... cries of anguish erupted and the game was won by the Cryx/Merc combo. It was an awesome game and playing with all those huge models was very cool.
The Colossals add a really nice new challenge to the game without being too overpowered, I think PP have got the balance just right, they are awesome against infantry but can still be taken down with some heavy jacks or a charge from some Weapon Manager infantry.
Below are a few pictures from the battle, they are a little blurry as the light isn't fantastic at Gambit HQ.

So whats next? Well I have lots going on at the moment, firstly I need to finish the Ultramarines Predator and an Ageis Defence line, this will complete my 1500 Ultramarines list for the Hemel 40K tourney. After this I have a whole pile of stuff to go through, sticking the Makifaux crew together might be next so I can at least try and get a few training games in. Warmachine wise I have a whole bunch of Khador stuff waiting as well as some Skorne for Hordes there is also an Ultramarines StormRaven and StormEagle waiting....... plus the new Daemons stuff coming out next week.
What I could really do with is some extra days in the week......
Until next time...

Wraith Engine and "the list".
Hello all...
I found myself in a situation, that most hobbyists have experienced at some point, where I have so many projects on the go I am in danger of not finishing any of them. So many ideas, so many models that I felt I was drowning a bit and not really getting anything done. Especially with the new 6th Ed of 40K out, the potential for new armies and projects racks up. So I decided to use a method my girlfriend uses for such a situation and one that I mocked her for - I made a list.
The idea of the list is to write down the things I have half finished for various armies and actually get them done before moving onto something new and buying more models. For example I am two Mournfang, two Ogres and an Ironblaster away from finishing my Ogres at 2400 points. Of course no army is ever finished and I will get more for them but this will give me my basic 2400 list and it will all be painted. I have a Cryx Wraith Engine that I got, built and then half painted before moving onto another new idea and it has sat on my table half painted for months. I started a Grey Knight army and then moved onto something else. So, I have made a list of the things I am going to paint first and I will get those done. Now painting something because you have to often leads to resentment of said model, so I am going to alternate. The club is going to Salute next year to run a game and as part of this I need to paint some Grey Knights, so I am going to alternate between a model on my list and some Grey Knights, this also means I will get to paint that Grey Knight army that I have bought already and has sat around in boxes since release day.
So number 1 on the list was the Cryx Wraith Engine. I managed to get one of these pretty much on release day and eagerly stuck it together and undercoated it. I based layered it and then it sat there for months looking at me. Once I had done my list and got cracking with it I was done in a couple of days and now I have a Wraith Engine to use in games, and it was all down to the list. So to my girlfriend - I apologise for all the times I mocked you for list making (don't think she reads this so I won't be getting any "I told you so's").
So on to the model, I wasn't too keen on this when it first came out, but it has grown on me and now I have one all painted up I actually really like it. I went for my basic Cryx scheme that I have used on the rest of the army. After a black undercoat it was dry brushed in Boltgun and then over brushed in bronze. The armour was painted in a dark Grey and highlighted with a lighter Grey, the whole model was then given a Black wash. After this had dried I did some highlights on the silver, painted the cloth parts Brown with a Bleach highlight and then washed the whole thing is a watered down Green wash. I think it looks pretty good and fits perfectly with the rest of the army, now to go crush some hobby.
Until next time....

White.
Hello folks,
White is my nemesis. I rate myself as a good painter, not GW professional standard but above average, that is until I try to paint something white. I discovered this when I started to play Warmachine a few years ago. My first army for Warmachine is Menoth and their primary colour is white. The models are awesome and I really like the armoured religious nutters and I think the white really suits their theme and it was something I wanted to try and paint. Now a really well painted white army looks amazing but trust me, it takes a lot of work.
Approach 1.
When I started the Menoth force the first models I painted were started off from a black undercoat and then worked up through various stages of greys to get to white. This takes a long time and on some of the detailed Menoth models thats a pain. Also as you are applying a lot of paint it can dull some of the details unless you do it properly and water down the paint. The first model seen here was painted with this method and I don't like it and I think you will agree its not up to my usual standard. It also took me about two years to finish, I started it, got bored and then painted a whole Cryx army and half an Ogre army........ and a Dystopian Wars fleet.................. and some Killa Kans before finally getting back to it to finish. The advantages of this method if you get it right are that it looks really good and the white will look solid and you can get some nice shading towards the edges of the armour. If you get it wrong then it can look rubbish, I think am half way with this result, if you don't look too close then it looks ok on the table.
Approach 2.
After struggling with the first approach I tried to do something a bit different with the next model. GW had just released they new Washes so I thought I would put them to the test. For this model I actually undercoated it in with white spray, second step was to paint the all the base colours on in one go. I then drowned the model in a black wash - almost in a "dipping" style. After this I then painted over the white again with a brush and also when over the base layers again before then highlighting everything. I think the look of this model is so much better. The reason it works is that you are starting with the white straight away, the "dipping" phase does the shading and then the second phase white paint looks better going over the white undercoat. The model looks cleaner, brighter and tidy. I was very pleased with this method and the new GW washes really help with this look.
Since I painted this model GW has revamped the whole paint line, and now include a White Base paint which is supposed to cover better, I have tried this on models and whilst it doesn't live up to the hype it does cover a lot better than the old GW white which, as we all know, was rubbish.
So now I have finally found a painting method for white which does provide results, whilst I still don't think they are up to my usual standard I do think the methods I have found look good and a whole army painted in this way should look pretty good on the table. So after three or so years I might actually get to finish the Menoth force that I always wanted.
Unti next time....

Here today Skorne tomorrow.
Hi Folks
I am off on my travels again for a few weeks working in Taiwan, so hobby time will have to take a break for a while, so thought I would just post up something before going. I have again been a little distracted and have moved off my painting plan. The Ork Mek models have been finished and I now have a completed list of Kans and Deff Dreds and i'll post up some pictures of them when I return. Over the last week I have been distracted by some Warmachine/Hordes stuff and this was compounded by a recent visit to my mothers..... I am originally from Burton On Trent and there is an amazing games shop there called Spirit Games. I spent much of my pocket money in this shop when I was a lad and its a gamers dream, I can spent hours (and a lot money given the chance) in there, they have everything for every game system there is. Right from D&D books, board games, card games, every miniatures game system the full works. If there was a gamers paradise then this place is it, if you are ever in that neck of the woods then you need to pay them a visit, just make sure you take a credit card.
So when I went to see my mother I thought I would pop in and have a browse, well browsing turned to buying when I found that they had a Skorne starter set and the faction book. I have been thinking about starting a Horde faction for a while and I really love the Skorne models, the war beasts are amazing models and some of the Warrior units are pretty awesome too. So with my resistance slowly slipping away and 60 quid burning a hole in my back pocket I left the shop with the smell of the old game shop of my youth in my nostrils and a bunch of new models to paint, because I figured the large pile of unpainted models in boxes I have wasn't enough already.
The box comes with the caster and two Cyclops light war beasts and one heavy war beast, I thought I would start by just painting one of the light beasts. This set contains the plastic versions of the models and I haven't painted up any of the plastics yet so was interested to see what they are like. I have to say, I am not that impressed, they are still great models but its not like the GW plastic, its a kind of resin type plastic. Not quite FW resin, but almost in-between true plastic and resin, it has almost a rubbery feel. It took a lot of cleaning, and I hate cleaning models and probably didn't do it justice as I was eager to get paint on the thing.
The paint also goes on a bit shiny, of course this can be cured with a coat of matt varnish, this model isn't varnished yet as it was raining when I finished and you should never varnish when there is moisture in the air as it can make the varnish go cloudy and ruin your newly painted model. I went for a traditional Skorne paint scheme of gold rimmed red armour. I am pleased with the result and am looking forward to getting the rest of the starter set done so I can have my first battles on the Horde side.
Until next time...
